Tall Wooden Lengola Ancestor Statue (Congo)

£360.00

The Lengola and Metoko are known in African art for their highly stylized statues. The stylization of the face and the silhouette aesthetically gives the statues an irresistible "little robot" style. This figurine is no exception; the body is very simplified, the limbs are square, the shapes generally geometric.

This wooden Lengola statue depicts a male with distinctive geometric shaped head, almost forming a diamond pattern. The face is covered in a lighter pigment to the dark patina of the wood. The facial features are simply carved and yet reveal a haunting presence through the round, staring eyes. The body is sensitively carved and the hands rest to either side of the stomach. The figure is naked with prominent genitals. Superb layering of colour pigments on the head.

Dimensions: H80x16x28cm
Weight: 3356g
