Swedish artist Kristian Holmqvist (1928–2015) trained as a public school teacher but abandoned the teaching career at the age of 50. He then devoted himself full-time to artistic activities such as drawing, illustration, painting and sculpture. He drew inspiration from childhood memories, archaeology, anthropology and history. The human body, animals, nature and ornaments are recurring themes found in his artistic practice.
