Raija Uosikkinen (1923–2004) was one of the prominent decorators of Finnish 20th-century design. During her four decades at the Arabia factory, she crafted many legendary decors for tableware and wall plaques.

Arabia began to make a wide range of collectibles in the 1970s. During these years, Raija Uosikkinen came to design two of the factory’s series of collectible plates: the Kalevala annual plates and the Christmas plate series. Each year, a different plate was launched in a limited edition. The illustrations are designed by Raija Uosikkinen and commemorate the Kalevala legend, the national epic of Finland. On the back of the plates a section of the Kalevala in English, Finnish and Swedish is shown. The plates are highly collectible and the first edition has become very rare nowadays.
